Samuel Halpert was born in Russia. He emigrated to New York in the 1890's. Early in his painting career he visited Paris, where he studied with Henri Matisse in Matisse's short lived art school in 1908. This connection to Matisse helped to give Halpert important Modernist credentials in art circles in his day.
