Born 1923. Studied art Carnegie Institute 1942-1943; U.of Alabama 1946; Cranbrook Academy 1946-1956, Museo des Belles Arti, Rome, 1948-1949. Awarded $1500 national Pepsi art scholarship in 1948; used money to paint & travel around Italy 1948-1951. Set up studio in Rome and befriended Afro(Basadella) and Americans Angelo Ippolito, Philip Guston, John Heliker. Moved to New York City 1951. Studio downtown at 31 Coenties Slip and 128 Front Street until 1968. Taught at Seamans Church Institute downtown Manhattan 1955-1960. Co-Founder of Tanager Gallery NYC 1952, regarded as first and most important cooperative artist run gallery in East Village for ten years. Taught at Cranbrook Academy c.1954-1960. Taught at NYU 10 years; Arts Students League 20 years, Lousiana State U; U. of Oregon; Cornell U. Over 25 solo exhibitions; 90+ group exhibions including prestious Guggenheim Museum 'Younger Amercan Painters' 1954; Walker Arts Center 'Vanguard '55; Stable Gallery Annual '53-'55.
