Fred Mitchell created 'Study for Solstice' in his Coenties Slip studio in southern Manhattan. The final version of the oil painting is called 'Summer Solstice' and was acquired by a collector in 2003. According to Mitchell in a story he related many times, upon seeing Summer Solstice in Mitchell's first solo exhibition at Tanager Gallery in 1953 Ellsworth Kelly called it the best painting he had seen in New York.
