SOLD (Jennette)Towards Coenties

1960

Oil on canvas

78 x 168 inches

SOLD. New information has been acquired about this painting regarding title and dimensions. Signed & dated. Fred Mitchell painted in a large cold water loft/studio near Coenties Slip in southern Manhattan. '(Jennette)Towards Coenties' is Mitchell's interpretation of the seaport area as it was changing and growing into the financial giant it is today. It is the largest oil Mitchell ever attempted. It is stretched on wooden stretcher bars originally used to paint one of Claude Monet's Water Lilies oils. Around 1957 Mitchell was given the stretchers bars by The Museum of Modern Art when the museum restored the Water Lilies paintings that they own.
